As a fashion editor you are in charge of creating fashion spreads, deciding what is reported, and organizing the layout of the magazine. A fashion editor must have many skills such as knowledge in fashion, English, photography, and an eye for detail.
Background
A fashion editor must have extensive knowledge in fashion and enjoy it. Learn as much as you can about fashion by taking classes in design, history, or researching by yourself. Read plenty of fashion magazines to get as much knowledge as you can about fashion. Although you don’t need it, getting a degree in English, fashion, or both is a good idea and can help you get your first job.
Experience
Start your career by writing for fashion blogs, magazines, or websites. This will help you gain knowledge on fashion and experience with writing and editing articles. Try to get an internship at a fashion magazine or somewhere in the fashion industry. This will get your foot in the door and help you work your way up the ladder. Get to know people such as photographers, editors, authors, designers and more. You may be able to find a job through these types of people.
Work Up the Ladder
You can’t expect to immediately begin your career as a fashion editor, but it takes several years of experience and promotions. Check for openings frequently and be patient. It isn’t simple to be a fashion editor, but if you take your time and do your best, you shouldn’t have a problem.
